How many wheelbarrow loads are in a cubic yard? Tables answer that one number and stop. The real question for a job is three numbers together: how many trips, how long they take, and how heavy each load is. This page does all three, from a raised bed, a cubic-yard order, or a cone pile, using the barrow volume you can actually move. It runs entirely in your browser and saves or sends nothing.
Volume in cubic feet: bed = length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12); cubic yards = yards × 27; cone pile = (1 ÷ 3) × π × radius² × height. Trips = ceil(volume ÷ usable barrow volume), so a partial last load still counts as a trip. Weight per full load = barrow volume × weight per cubic foot. Total weight = volume × weight per cubic foot. Total time = trips × minutes per round trip.
With the defaults above (bed mode): bed 8 ft × 4 ft × 12 in deep = 32.00 cu ft = 1.19 cu yd. Trips = ceil(32 ÷ 3) = 11. Weight per full load = 3 × 80 = 240 lb. Total weight = 32 × 80 = 2,560 lb = 1.28 US tons. Total time = 11 × 5 = 55 minutes. For comparison, one cubic yard (27 cu ft) alone is 9 trips at 3 cu ft per load and 5 trips at 6 cu ft per load — the barrow volume you enter changes the answer more than the pile shape does.
Is the last load really full weight? No. The per-load weight is the full-load figure; the last trip is usually partial and lighter, but the total weight and the trip count already account for that. What weight should I enter? Your material's weight per cubic foot, which varies a lot with moisture — wet soil and gravel are far heavier than dry mulch. If you do not know it, weigh one known volume yourself rather than guessing from a table. What about the barrow's rated capacity? Check it separately: a load this page counts may still exceed your barrow's rated load or a safe lifting weight, especially on slopes or soft ground. Does this tell me whether to buy bulk or bags? No. It only reports trips, time and weight for the volume you entered; you compare bulk and bag options, prices and delivery yourself. This page is not professional hauling, safety or purchasing advice.
